Pazhavangadi Ganapathi Temple in Trivandrum
Following my exploration of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Kuthiramalika Palace, which took up approximately 2-hours, I decided to pay a visit to the Pazhavangadi Ganapathi Temple, a heritage site dating back to the 17th century, which is conveniently located only a 6-minute walk away. The Pazhavangadi Maha Ganapathy temple, located in East Fort, boasts a distinctive architectural style and is dedicated to Sri Mahaganapathy (Ganesha). The temple’s roots can be traced back to Padmanabhapuram, the former capital of Venad, where it originally stood. According to legend, the palace and fortress in Padmanabhapuram were safeguarded by sentries on all sides to keep the ruler safe.
Another historical document (Volume 13, Churuna 1282 of 946 M. E / 1771 A.D.) indicates that to prevent rain from disrupting the Maharaja’s procession towards the east, 300 coconuts were smashed at the Pazhavangadi Ganapati temple. This information sheds light on the temple’s existence at Pazhavangati before 1771 A.D. The temple’s central figure is depicted in a seated posture with the right leg folded underneath. In addition to the 32 Lord Ganesha sculptures, the temple also venerates Dharmasasta, Goddess Durga, and Nagaraja. The temple received a major facelift in 2019 and is now maintained by the Indian Army after the Travancore Army was assimilated into the Indian Forces.
The primary ritual at the temple involves smashing coconuts, while other offerings associated with Lord Ganesha, such as Ganapathy Homam, Appam, and Modakam, are likewise performed. Pazhavangadi Temple has loosened its traditional dress requirements, allowing men to wear shirts and women to wear salwar suits within the temple grounds since 2019. With its awe-inspiring architecture and tranquil atmosphere, the Pazhavangadi Ganapathi Temple is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Trivandrum. This sacred site boasts a rich history and cultural significance that is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit. So why wait? Add this incredible destination to your bucket list today and experience the magic for yourself.
