Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most ancient cities and has a long and rich history. It was first settled in the 4th century BC and for over 1,000 years was the capital of Sri Lanka. It’s home to some of the country’s most impressive ancient ruins, which are a testament to its former glory. These days, Anuradhapura is a popular destination for tourists and Sri Lankans alike. There’s something about the city that’s just so captivating, and it’s easy to see why it’s been called the “City of Gems.” If you’re looking for an authentic Sri Lankan experience, Anuradhapura is worth a visit.
Visiting the Iconic Ruwanweliseya Stupa
As soon as I enter the complex, I’m struck by the sheer scale of the Ruwanweliseya Stupa. This is an iconic sight in Anuradhapura, and it’s easy to see why. The stupa is a massive structure, towering above everything else in the complex. It’s made completely out of brick, and its dome is capped with a golden spire. I can’t help but feel transfixed as I walk around it, taking in the intricate carvings and the beautiful details. This is a must-see for anyone visiting Anuradhapura—it’s one of the most iconic sights in the city, and it’s worth spending some time exploring it.
Exploring Ancient Archaeological Treasure
Anuradhapura was the ancient capital of Sri Lanka and is home to some of the most important Buddhist temples and ruins in the country. It’s an archaeological treasure trove, with buildings and relics dating back to the 4th century BC. This was my first time visiting Anuradhapura, and I was blown away by the beauty and serenity of the city. Wandering through the ruins, you can feel the history and culture that has built up over centuries. It’s an amazing experience to be able to see these ancient sites up close. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura is worth a visit.
Soar above it all with a Hot Air Balloon Ride
One of my favourite experiences in Anuradhapura is taking a hot air balloon ride over the area. You get an incredible bird’s eye view of the ruins and the nearby countryside. The sunrises are breathtaking and as you soar through the sky, you can see for miles upon miles. I also love talking to experienced local pilots who know all the best spots to float and can often point out interesting landmarks or sites along the way.
Every flight is different, depending on wind direction, but no matter what your course, you’re guaranteed some amazing sights. It’s one thing to visit ancient ruins on foot, but another to witness them from high above in a hot air balloon—it puts things into perspective in a whole new way. If you have time and your budget allows it, then I highly recommend trying out this experience while in Anuradhapura!
Retreating to Tissa Wewa
If you’re looking to find peace and get in touch with your spiritual side, I suggest retreating to an ancient reservoir known as Tissa Wewa. Not only is it home to a beautiful lake, but there are also temples and shrines located around the premises. Every corner of Tissa Wewa tells a compelling story. When you wander around, it’s easy to feel like you’ve gone back in time, as the ruins of King Dutugamunu’s palace remain today.
A giant stone statue of Lord Buddha also stands tall in the centre, making for a truly surreal experience. When I visited this place, I was overwhelmed with feelings of tranquillity and awe–seeing the carefully crafted walls and elaborate buildings gave me an immense appreciation for Sri Lankan culture. I felt so privileged to be in such an enchanting location that had largely gone unnoticed by the modern world. It truly was a spiritual experience!
Taking in the Meaningful Monuments
The Isurumuniya Vihara and the Mirisaveti stupa are two of Anuradhapura’s most important monuments. They have both been around for centuries and yet still shine as brightly as ever; a testament to the strength of this ancient city. The Isurumuniya Vihara (or temple) is believed to have been built during the 3rd century BC, but what remains today is of a later date. It is known the world over for its beautiful carvings, like those of Prince Saliya and his beloved Asokamala, which can be found on one of the stone walls. One can also find an intriguing stone bath within the temple grounds that has been fed by water channels since ancient times!
The Mirisaveti Stupa is also quite a sight. It was built in 249 BC and stands tall at 55 meters. Although it has been damaged many times over by floods and other natural disasters, it was lovingly restored each time by kings who recognised its immense historical value. Today, it stands majestic amongst lush green gardens and palm trees – a true sight to behold!
Anuradhapura is a city that is steeped in history and Buddhism. It’s home to some of the most ancient ruins in Sri Lanka, as well as some of the best-preserved Buddhist temples. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination to explore, Anuradhapura is worth considering.
