An Insider’s Guide to Exploring Jain Ghat in Varanasi
It’s easy to miss the Jain Ghat if you’re not paying attention. Located in a narrow alley off of the main Varanasi riverfront, it’s easy to walk right past this small temple without knowing it’s there. But if you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful spot to explore in Varanasi, the Jain Ghat is worth a visit. The temple here is dedicated to the Jain community, one of the four main religions in India.
The Jains are known for their extreme asceticism and pacifism, and their temples are some of the most beautiful in all of India. The Jain Ghat is no exception. I had the chance to visit the Jain Ghat on my last trip to Varanasi, and it was one of my favourite experiences in the city. If you’re planning a visit to Varanasi, be sure to put the Jain Ghat on your list. It’s worth a visit.

Overview of Varanasi and Jain Ghat
Varanasi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, and it’s easy to see why. From the ghats that line the Ganges River to the temples and markets, there’s always something to explore. One of my favourite spots in Varanasi is Jain Ghat. This ghat is dedicated to Mahavira, one of the most important figures in Jainism. It’s a beautiful spot, and it’s a great place to watch the sunset over the river.
What to See and Do at Jain Ghat
When you visit Jain Ghat, make sure to take in the architecture of the temples and the views of the Ganges. The ghat is a popular spot for Hindu cremations, so you’ll witness ceremonies happening throughout the day. Be respectful and silent when observing these rituals. You can also take a dip in the holy river or participate in a puja (prayer ritual). If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore the ghats further upstream. There’s plenty to see and do at Jain Ghat, so make sure to spend some time here during your visit to Varanasi.
Where to Stay Near Jain Ghat
There are plenty of great places to stay near Jain Ghat in Varanasi. I recommend the Mahalaxmi Guest House, which is a few minutes’ walks from the ghat. It’s clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. Plus, the staff is super friendly and helpful. Another great option is the Arya Guest House. It’s located right on the banks of the Ganges and offers beautiful views of the river. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the staff is very welcoming and hospitable. Finally, if you’re looking for a more luxurious option, then I suggest staying at the Surya Hotel. It’s one of the most luxurious hotels in Varanasi, and it’s located just a few minutes’ walks from Jain Ghat. The rooms are modern and elegantly furnished, and the service is top-notch.
Restaurants and Cafes
If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite before or after your visit to Jain Ghat, then there are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the vicinity. Most are small and family-run, serving up local specialities such as chaat, samosa, and kachori. One of my personal favourites is the Shanti Vihar Restaurant & Café, which serves up delicious North Indian vegetarian fare. The restaurant is located close to Jain Ghat, so it’s an ideal spot for those who want to fuel up after exploring.
Another great option is Jain Ghat Café, a small café near the ghat that’s open from sunrise until late at night. They serve up delicious hot drinks like chai, lassi and coffee, as well as snacks like samosa and pakoras. No matter where you choose to eat, you’ll find plenty of options around Jain Ghat in Varanasi. So be sure to pop into one of these restaurants or cafés for some delicious food before your next adventure!
Shopping and Nightlife
When it comes to shopping, Jain Ghat has a plethora of options for the curious traveller. You’ll find small shops alongside the river selling trinkets and souvenirs, as well as shops selling traditional clothes, wooden handicrafts, and religious items. Don’t forget to bargain! If you’re looking for something a bit more modern, head to the nearby shopping mall for a wide range of products including electronics, clothes, and food. There are also several markets in the area where you can buy everything from spices to jewellery. For nightlife lovers, there are several cocktail bars at Jain Ghat that offer live music and dance performances. Music festivals such as the Kashi Utsav and Ganga Aarti Festivals are also popular events held in Varanasi during certain times of the year.
Safety Precautions for Exploring Jain Ghat
Whenever you’re travelling to a new city, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. Exploring Jain Ghat in Varanasi is no exception. I recommend dressing conservatively, (no shorts), and carrying a printed map in case you get lost—or taking an experienced guide with you. At night, stick to well-lit areas and consider hiring an Uber for transportation after dark. It’s also important to know what areas are off-limits. If a sign says it’s private property or a restricted area, don’t go there—it’s the best way to avoid any run-ins with local law enforcement or getting lost in deserted places.
Finally, if someone approaches you offering souvenirs or services, politely decline and then move away if needed. Even though the locals are friendly, it’s always better to be cautious as an unfamiliar tourist exploring a new city. If you’re looking for a peaceful and spiritual place to spend some time in Varanasi, Ghat, or to learn more about the Jain religion, then Jain Ghat is a great place to visit. Just be sure to take it easy – the area is a pilgrimage site for Jains, and visitors are expected to show respect.
