5 Things to do in Medieval French Eze
The Norman-style hamlets with their half-timbered houses are one of the things, I adore most about the French countryside. Between Nice and Monte-Carlo is the old French hilltop village of Eze, pronounced Ezz. Èze offers some of the most amazing views of the Riviera, particularly over Monaco. Èze perched atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea has earned it the nickname Eagle’s Nest. This hamlet is recognisable from a distance thanks to its ochre-coloured church and bell-clock tower. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption dates back to the 17th century.
Isis is portrayed on an Egyptian cross within this cathedral, revealing its ancient roots. While the Mediterranean Sea provides stunning views, the commune of Èze in southern France also offers a magnificent array of historic chateaus and gardens. If you want to get to Èze from Monte Carlo quickly and economically, take a public bus and climb the hill to the village. The bus stop at the foot of the mountain serves as a drop-off point for those returning to Monte Carlo by public transportation. During your time in Èze, here are the top five things you should try.

Soak-in Spectacular Views
The trail from the parking lot to Èze’s fascinating hamlet is anything but straightforward. The trip to the top is challenging with steep and narrow winding paths. The amazing views of the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur) and the Mediterranean sea, however, make the trek worthwhile.
Eze Fortified Architecture
Aside from the breathtaking scenery, Èze also has some fantastic Medieval fortified structures on exhibit. Take, for example, Eze’s oldest building, the 13th-century Chapelle De La Sainte Croix, a castle that was demolished in 1706 but eventually resurrected by the villagers. The community of Èze is set around the castle’s foundation.
The architectural splendour extends to modern-day medieval-style structures, which house some of the most amazing hotels, stores, and galleries. You’ll come across several locals who have turned into artisans while strolling around the village. Aromatic spice stores, perfumeries, and shops offering artwork by local artists are just a few of the places worth visiting.
Travel to the Middle Age
You will feel as if you have been transported to the Middle Ages as you walk down the small alleyways of this town. The mediaeval paths lead to some breathtaking sights.
Eze Exotic Gardens
Èze town is known for its spectacular greenery in addition to its architectural grandeur. From cacti that grow along the wall to other botanical wonders, Le Jardin Exotique d’Eze, or Eze’s exotic garden, is where you can see some of the remarkable species. A narrow stone path leads to Jardin Exotique, located 1,200 feet above sea level at the top of a cliff. The view from the top is certainly worth the effort. Inside, you will find a wide variety of cacti and other fascinating foliage. It’s rejuvenating to go around and marvel at the remarkable variety of flora that can be seen lounging up the hill.
Try the Local Cuisine
A journey to France would not be complete without experiencing the country’s world-renowned cuisine. While the Cote d’Azur is home to a slew of world-renowned restaurants, you can also find superb, authentic fare at several small local establishments. Crêpes, pizza, enormous fresh salads like tuna Niçoise, anchovies, and a classic burger are some of the must-have dishes in Eze, France. Choose a red wine to accompany your lunch; a 22 EUR bottle of Côtes de Provence rosé is a good choice.
In the village of Eze, you’ll find a few luxurious inns. One of them is Chateau Eza, a boutique hotel. Located on the crest of a hill, this 400-year-old Chateau offers breathtaking views from every room. This is the ideal setting for exuding authentic French charm! Consider visiting Saint Paul-de-Vence in the French Riviera while you’re in town. There is a hilltop location for St. Paul, but it lacks the stunning sea vistas of Eze.
