Beer Chug at 1st Brewhouse: Pune’s Finest Microbrewery
Pune may be the education and business hub of Maharashtra but, did you know that floundering across its Southern zone is a hotel that takes you straight into the arms of astonishing Egyptian architecture. The Corinthians is a well-known resort in South Pune, and the chances are that you may have already caught a glimpse of it in many Bollywood movies. Besides being frequented by a large number of Bollywood celebs, this property, is also visited by travel enthusiasts seeking a break at an unusual location. My weekend stay at ‘The Corinthians’ introduced me to its Greek Egyptian decor abode a lush green composition.
The exciting entryway of ‘The Corinthians’ welcomes you to a series of bronze horses arranged in a well-manicured landscape. Exit is marked, by gigantic Egyptian figurines! As you drive into the resort, you will cross over 1st Brewhouse, the in-house brewery of the Corinthians. Ancient Egyptians are said to have consumed beer daily, and I’d say having an on-site brewery is a brilliant way to help establish a connection with the authentic Egyptian culture. Besides, even if you had to look at it from the modern world’s point of view – here you are, chugging the freshest beer in the town. Something most people relish over a vacation. There are a variety of beverages available for the teetotallers as well.
But today, in this article, I will be talking about all the delicious beers I tasted at The Corinthians. During my weekend stay at this resort, I spent the entire Saturday evening at the 1st Brewhouse and its outdoor space, Doolally on Tap. 1st Brewhouse is a conceptual bar that brings together the finest of freshly brewed draft beer right out of a tap! And they also offer great views of the surrounding landscape from their outdoor seating. Indoors are furnished with an elegant bar and a funky dance floor stacked with solid beer barrels.
1st Brewhouse offers a crazy range of beers and is a fabulous bar restaurant to spend long hours lazying in the comforts of a sunshiny lounger hiding behind the cool shades of a taproom. At Doolally, 1st Brewhouse, I tasted the best keg beer of Pune. All that while, I enjoyed a photo-perfect landscape overlooking four bronze horses.
As I was visiting ‘The Corinthians,’ and its brewery 1st Brewhouse at the invitation of the property; I was made to sample quite a few beers including, Apple Cider, Belgian Witbier, English Bitter, India Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Kimaya Vanilla Porter and Kimaya Pale Ale. (From right to left) Anil Singh, the gracious manager of the 1st Brewhouse, hosted my tasting session.
The first beer I tasted was Apple Cider, a refreshing combination of cider and beer in a single brew. What makes this union remarkable is that it combines the Earth’s oldest drink, beer, with a contemporary cider from Great Britain. And it tastes fantastic! On the other hand, the roots of the Belgian Witbier, or the Flemish White Beer, can be traced back to the dominant Hoegaarden bassinet of the extinct Witbier.
This Belgian craft beer is inducted with a fuzzy lemony finish, evincing layered aromas of pervasive spices and herbal tangs. Next up on the sampling was the copperish English Bitter, a mild brew from the family of the Ale beers. The English Bitter Beer has a fruity tone with a certain dryness to make it taste like a Malt brew.
I once read an article in the Guardian that said, “When ordinary beer couldn’t survive the journey to India, a new pale ale was born.” And here I was, meeting Indian and Kimaya Pale Ale, the remodelled version of the 18th-century homogenization of yeast and vinegar at the 1st Brewhouse. It’s a heavily strong beer that you must positively taste this season.
Other beers I chugged in were Oatmeal Stout and Kimaya Vanilla Porter. Stouts are the strongest beers wherein Oatmeal Stout and Vanilla Porter boast a rare dark colour, intense texture and roasted malt flavour. The next time you are in Pune, drop by this exotic resort to taste some of the most phenomenal beers you can get your hands on in India.
